For the contact points with the #guitar, I thought about upholstered pads with underlying foam covered with fabric to determine (something that won't scratch the guitar's finish). I happen to work for a manufacturer of specialty furniture and we do some upholstery, might as well take advantage of it. Would it be overkill though? All the guitar stands I've seen use rubber, felt or leather strips glued to the stand.
