"... civilization is based on a clearly defined and widely accepted yet often unarticulated hierarchy. Violence done by those higher on the hierarchy to those lower is nearly always invisible, that is, unnoticed. When it is noticed, it is fully rationalized. Violence done by those lower on the hierarchy to those higher is unthinkable, and when it does occur it is regarded with shock, horror, and the fetishization of the victims."

The United States has historically spent about $70 million per year on humanitarian aid for Afghanistan (about four dollars per person per year, the equivalent of about a hundred and eighty dollars if it were given in the United States), which is about how much the United States spent per Afghan on the bombing campaign

I've been waffling about one of the books I want to put in my 20 Books 20 Days journey. it did have a huge impact on me and my realization that I'm a post/anti-civ anarchist.
The problem is the author. He is a transphobe, an FBI snitch, and I have a personal beef with him because after speaking to Occupy Oakland in the early days, he co-wrote an article with Chris Hedges throwing us under the bus for direct action, which was totally hypocritical of all his published works. I'm talking of Derrick Jensen.
I don't like him personally but I have to admit that reading a large percentage of his books in 2011 opened my eyes to things I'd felt but never consciously understood.
Back in 2013 or so I still had a FaceBorg account and I posted a link to an article on the Deep Green Resistance website and several of the radicals I'd been in the street with came for me with metaphorical torches and pitchforks. So I've been reluctant to post that one book that especially resonated with me and changed my thinking.
I give Jensen no passes for his transphobia or any of his other issues, and my beef with him is still central in my heart but still, his books were a stepping stone to my current worldview. So I'm going to post one of his books tomorrow and ask, nicely, that folks remember that I don't like the guy either but a broken clock is still right twice a day.
Thanks for listening.
