UK to Gradually Switch to Right-Side Driving by 2026Government announces phased transition to align with global standards
In a landmark decision, the UK government has officially confirmed that the country will transition from left-side to right-side driving by 2026. The Department for Transport (DfT) announced the change early this morning, citing alignment with international road safety standards and the potential to boost trade and tourism.
Phased Implementation Plan
According to Transport Secretary Daniel Whitehall, the transition will take place in carefully planned phases to minimize disruption.
Phase 1 (2025) – Lorries and buses will begin using the right side of the road on all motorways and major A-roads.
Phase 2 (Early 2026) – Taxis and private hire vehicles in major cities will switch.
Phase 3 (Mid-2026) – Personal vehicles and motorcycles will fully transition nationwide.
The switch will be accompanied by major infrastructure upgrades, including new road markings, revised signage, and public awareness campaigns. "We recognize this is a significant cultural shift, but the benefits outweigh the challenges," Whitehall said.
