Generative AI doesnโ€™t โ€œdemocratize creativityโ€

Last weekend, I saw a LinkedIn post from influential AI-educator Ethan Mollick, in which Mollick presented a YouTube channel of videos created using GenAI. Glaring copyright and IP issues notwithstanding, one thing in particular about the post rubbed me up the wrong way: the term "democratizing" applied to AI and creativity. Link to original post Mollick shares a lot of useful information about Generative AI on LinkedIn, and it's definitely worth joining his 100,000+ followers for the [โ€ฆ]

Ah, the age of #automation, where everything is magically "democratized" except for, you know, actual awareness. ๐Ÿค–๐Ÿš€ Now anyone with a pulse and an #AI can #launch a product in a weekend, while the systems crumble and the #ops #team is replaced by a rubber chicken. ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŽฉ #Progress

We Automated Everything Except Knowing What's Going On

AI collapsed the cost of building software, but the systems underneath are buckling. We're entering an era where everyone can build and nobody understands what they've built.

Benanav vs Morozov on the Political Economy of AI. Now, this will definitely be quite a read...!

"Choosing among available paths may widen or contract the field of possibilities. Some futures are rendered easier to realize; others are effectively foreclosed; and peopleโ€™s understandings of what matters shift as they move forward in timeโ€”much as in Morozovโ€™s own account of technological worldmaking. The difference is that, in my framework, this process is understood from the outset as political because it unfolds under conditions of scarcity that force collective choice among rival futures.

What is puzzling about Morozovโ€™s critique is that this political core disappears from view. A framework designed to organize conflict over investmentโ€”to make trade-offs visible, contestable, and binding when not everything can be pursued at onceโ€”is recast as a system of administrative closure that would prematurely discipline experimentation. His analysis is not simply a misunderstanding of my proposed framework but a reversal of its intent: It reads an account meant to politicize worldmaking as an attempt to suppress it."

A Real Political Economy of Technology - The Ideas Letter

Two technological futures are competing for political and material priority: generative AI and the green transition. Benanav argues that while AI is marketed as a world-reordering breakthrough, its productivity gainsโ€ฆ
