The term “late stage capitalism” was first used in a 1925 publication by the German social scientist Werner Sombart, according to Wikipedia. So clearly it’s just not an accurate term. You wouldn’t have late stage cancer then live another 101 years.

To be fair this woman is getting a clue – unfortunately it required the death of an innocent old man:

“Maybe a part of me was just like, I don’t want to put another black man in jail,” the unidentified 23-year-old told the New York Post over the weekend.

Now, however, she is saying, “I regret it 100 percent and feel really bad that a man lost his life.”

Plus the screaming about the poverty, which the screamers do not link to the annual inflation hitting 211 percent in 2023 because for the previous twenty years the central bank financed their endless deficist after deficit until the peso lost 99 percent of its value against the dollar. Half the country was at or below the poverty line when Milei came to power.

He changed things in ways the Euros (and Britain, and us) simply will not follow – at least until we hit rock bottom:

The fiscal deficit was eliminated for the first time in 16 years. Monthly inflation fell from 25 percent to low single digits. The central bank stopped printing to fund the Treasury. Country risk dropped from over 2,500 basis points to a fraction of that. Argentine sovereign debt, which used to trade like a default option, began behaving like normal emerging market paper.

Critics say poverty rose. It did, briefly, because removing price controls and subsidies revealed the real prices of energy, transport and food that the state had been hiding with debt. Once measured honestly, poverty has been falling fast. Real wages are recovering. Mortgages in pesos are reappearing, something that had not been possible in a generation.

This matters beyond Argentina. It is the clearest live experiment in whether a developed-style economy can be rebuilt by pulling the state out of places it never belonged. Spain, Italy and France should be paying attention. A country does not get poor because it lacks resources. It gets poor because its political class learned to live off printing money and calling it social policy.

Argentina spent 80 years proving that. It is now spending two years proving the opposite.

Schadenfreudeliciousness X: Virginia

The follow-up to the story about the Democrat gerrymandering in the state of Virginia, where they won their corrupted referendum to re-district the state and go from a lead in House seats of 6-5 to 10-1 – only to see it destroyed in the Virginia Supreme Court because they didn’t follow the State constitution:

On March 6, 2026, the General Assembly of Virginia submitted to Virginia voters a proposed constitutional amendment that authorizes partisan gerrymandering of congressional districts in the Commonwealth. We hold that the legislative process employed to advance this proposal violated Article XII, Section 1 of the Constitution of Virginia. This constitutional violation incurably taints the resulting referendum vote and nullifies its legal efficacy.
…
While the Commonwealth is free by its lights to do the right thing for the right reason, the Rule of Law requires that it be done the right way….This violation irreparably undermines the integrity of the resulting referendum vote and renders it null and void…Constitutions should not be changed lightly.

One of the many dark pieces of humour in this whole thing is that back in 2019 Virginian lawmakers overwhelmingly voted for the creation of a 16-member advisory commission that would include a mix of citizen members and lawmakers that would likely have put an end to gerrymandering in the State. This was then voted on as a referendum in 2020, winning overwhelming support from voters.

Obviously the Democrat Party has had a change of heart since then, hence this year’s referendum.

Another layer of juicy goodness comes from the fact that the Democrat Party bluntly told the State Supreme Court that they were not allowed to rule on any of this before the referendum vote, which has basically resulted in them pissing away about $60 million on this wasted effort, money that would have been better spent on House races in the rest of the nation.

Some Democrat party members went further, falling all the way into a sea of bile against their GOP opponents, followed by triumphalism when they won. Ms Louise Lucas was among the vilest and most prominent.

Britain now down to five operational frigates

I didn’t expect the Royal Navy to collapse further in the brief time since I wrote my post, Britannia Rues The Waves, but here we are:

HMS Iron Duke has been stripped of her weapons and sensors and has not been to sea since October 2025, despite no formal decommissioning announcement being made.

Every navy in the world is constantly decommissioning warships as they age and become obsolete, not worth a re-fit. The US Navy recently made that decision for a Los-Angeles class attack submarine, the USS Boise (SSN-764), which had been sitting in dock since 2015 waiting for a refit, the contract for which was only finally awarded in 2024. But the Navy realised its remaining 20% of service life, perhaps three deployments, wasn’t worth another $1.9 billion, which is better spent on newer subs.

But in the case of HMS Iron Duke the refit had already been done:

Iron Duke had been laid up in Portsmouth since 2017 and arrived at Devonport in such poor condition that the structural work on her hull was almost twice what had been needed on any previous ship in the class….The withdrawal comes less than three years after a £103 million refit that by any measure was extraordinary in its scope. The work took 49 months and more than 1.7 million man-hours, and was described as the most complex ever carried out on a Type 23.

Any investor understands the sunk cost fallacy, but this wasn’t a question of finishing the job, as with the USS Boise. The Iron Duke had been at sea as recently as late last year and even if it wasn’t worth upgrading her further why just pull her from service when there are so few ships?
