The share of #Spotpriced electricity in households in Finland has quickly increased to one third (red line in graph below). This allows households to participate in #demandSideManagement thus improving grid balancing and integration of more wind power. The introduction of 15-minute resolution in spot pricings also helps.

I previously worked on the https://sparcs.info/en/cities/espoo/ project to develop #PositiveEnergyDistricts that would allow prosumers to trade their surplus electricity within that district, but without the support of the local distribution utility this was not possible. The district would not be off-grid, it would rather support the national grid by trading, and offering #demandsidemanagement aggregation and energy storage services.

#VirtualPowerPlants are cheaper and faster to deploy than utility-scale batteries when increasing RE integration and ensuring that the grid is in balance:

'..slight, infrequent adjustments to the temperature settings of a smart thermostat (i.e., a couple of degrees) can provide hundreds or even thousands of megawatts of peak demand reduction if aggregated across enough participants within a power market region.'

The fokus should now be on quick solutions that work, like #energyEfficiency, #insulation and #heatRecovery in existing building stock, and automation for #DemandSideManagement. Thermal #SeasonalStorage and bidirectional low-temperature #DistrictHeating should also be expedited. #Biogas has plenty potential still unused. #SolarEnergy both PV and thermal, will provide cheap energy March-October.
