Timing and luck can be everything. I sometimes think about the fact that AirBnB is profitable while Uber isn’t is because at a crucial juncture, the #DeleteUber controversies sprang up and VCs invested in Lyft which was close to failing.
So instead of a profitable gig economy monopoly like AirBnB we have an unprofitable gig economy duopoly with Uber & Lyft.
It really goes to show the difference competition makes. Would AirBnB get away with such high cleaning fees otherwise?
Feeling very cheerful right now. Was getting increasingly stressed and p*&sed off that my backup car, which I had on CarNextDoor for over a year, was going to sit idle while we're away on holidays, whereas it used to earn its keep when not in use by me (waiting for new Minicab-MiEV to come from Japan atm). I delisted it when CND was bought and rebranded as Uber Carshare. I listed it on DriveMyCar but the service is a dinosaur and takes a MASSIVE commission and it hasn't had any bookings for the amount I expect to earn from it compared to CND. Tried to list on Turo which just launched in AU, but they don't allow cars older than 10 years even though my car has a very low odo for its age (2008).
This morning I randomly looked on the Play store to see if DriveMyCar had an app, and lo, I found Drive Mate - which seems to be very similar to CND except it has flat rate hire, more like traditional hire cars, but otherwise very similar. It never showed up on a web search for Car Sharing, stupidly. EASY to list. Has terrible reviews on Trustpilot and Play store, which seems to be down to specific bad hires. Really hope it works as well as CND. Crossing fingers! I had just about given up there would be anything to move to.

#Twitter now is what 2017 was for Uber. Dumpster fire after dumpster fire. To be a fly on the wall during their All Hands!
Will Twitter survive? Yes.
But like the #DeleteUber movement, users moved to Lyft and other rideshare platforms in droves, but it didn’t kill Uber.
Whether someone chooses to stay on #BirdSite depends on their own personal values and the perceived value they derive from Twitter.
Competition is good. I see a lot of potential in #Mastodon and plan to make this my home.
Uber taking pro-immigrant, pro-union hashtag #deleteuber and repurposing it as a marketing gambit post-George Floyd by buying large billboards and online ads ostensibly telling racists if they dont like Uber’s empty corporate BLM branding they can #deleteuber was underrated evil
Uber is sending reminder emails for an account.
Try and login. But that requires them to send an SMS which requires me to send them an SMS first (?!) but I don’t have that phone number anymore.
What’s supposed to happen here? A lifetime of garbage emails? #DeleteUber
