In Peter Carlsens interpretation of Delacroix's 'Liberty Leading the People' called 'Denmark 2009' (excerpt) we are not lead by freedom but by a consumer (the painter himself) with beer belly and shopping bag wawing the Danish flag!

Then Delacroix writes in his journal in 1850, and says it better:
