Del Monte Crushed Hawaiian Pineapplepublished in The Saturday Evening Post - July 14, 1928Scan credit unknownFor those of you unaware, "Crushed" is quite appropriate as the U.S. division of Del Monte declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week due to being incredibly crushed in debt. While the canned and processed food market is nowhere near what it used to be, Del Monte is still the number one or two brand in many categories. Due to this, I doubt that the familiar red logo on a green can or bottle will completely disappear from American supermarket shelves.So...how could this happen? I can't say for certain. However, the ownership of Del Monte is such a convoluted mess in how it has changed hands under various domestic and foreign conglomerates that it is likely much more due to multiple bad moves on the corporate chess board than it is fewer people buying canned produce.
