Fedi Canadian political curiosity of the day:

Was followed by someone with Canadian flag emojis all over their profile. Their bio said they were interested in climate change and social justicey stuff (including hashtag "politics" which will be important later) and said they would "BLOCK" anti-LGBTQ+ folks and racists. It also said #NeverVoteConservative. Nationalism aside, (nationalism is terrifyingly normalised with Canadians) that all seemed good to me but then they followed their line about blocking those bad folks with "Communists --Block" which is ... weird. So, I messaged them and asked why they followed me and also block communists, to which they responded that their vision is partially impaired right now, and they didn't see "communism" in my bio. They thanked me for telling them and promptly blocked me. They said they are for "degrowth" but without "politics," which seems bizarre to me. Anyone encountered this before? How can you change the way the world works enough to get "degrowth" without "politics"? And why is "communism" "political" but "never vote conservative" not?

(Also, degrowth without communism/anarchism isn't gonna cut it, but that's beside the point.)

Fuck “Sustainable Development Goals,” have y’all ever heard of Communism?: Reviewing Kōhei Saitō’s Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto

It’s hard to overstate the significance of a degrowth COMMUNIST MANIFESTO selling so many copies in Japan alone and the ensuing pseudo-celebrity of it’s author, though of course as many are quick to remark, purchasing a book and agreeing with its contents, let alone enacting it, are not quite the same thing. Nonetheless, the left could do with more “ideas lying around,” to quote one of my least favourite men in history…

Older white guy rants to me and a fem colleague about how the Ford government lets private long-term care coorprations/condo boards and landlords grift the living hell out of regular people, but prefaces his rant with, "and beleive me, I'm no socialist." I couldn't get a word in edge-wise, but I'd love to a have asked, "why not? And what do you want then?" I'm so glad that generally folks seem much more willing to use socialism and identify as a socialist (at least in the Anglo-Americas I experience) than they were even just 10 years ago, but encounters like these are bizzare. If you have a problem with private ownership of land, you really ought to have a problem with a socio-economic system that privileges just such an arrangement and trends, pretty well inevitability, towards (neo)liberalism and then the slide to fascism. Socialism (/anarchism/communism/communalism, etc.) is the alternative, friend.

@WorkingFamilies I think living should be enough for a decent life. Work if you can, but 40 hours a week (full-time) is way too much. #degrowth #DegrowthCommunism

There is a very simple way to achieve the minimalist lifestyle. I call it minimalistic income.

Lade upp mina anteckningar från kapitel 0-4 av Slow Down: How Degrowth Communism Can Save the Earth av Kohei Saito.

Bok: Slow Down: How Degrowth Communism Can Save the Earth av Kohei Saito - Del 1

I'm kind of annoyingly becoming a fan of Kōhei Saitō... Fan is a weird word to use for "public intellectuals," and even weirder for specific theorists l, but I'm not sure what else to call it at this point. Would love to hear more about that first question though:

Degrowth Communism: Envisioning a World Beyond Capitalism

"The literature on degrowth routinely argues (appropriately so) that the global north rather than the global south must be the target for change, but it may well be that the vanguard for degrowth resides, paradoxically, in the global south. It may be that subconscious bias causes us to believe that the global south must catch up with the economic production of the wealthiest states, rather than encouraging us to imagine that the wealthy states need to catch up to the level of consciousness displayed by the most radical societies in the global south."

Is Degrowth an Academic Field or a Mass Movement? Taking Degrowth to the People!

Degrowth, I believe, is at a critical cross road - advocates must now choose to continue to regard degrowth as an unending thought experiment, or to take degrowth into communities of ordinary folks.

Can economic growth be decoupled from emissions? Yes, for sure, easily even.

Can economic growth be decoupled from environmental degradation in general? Absolutely not. The sheer throughput of materials through the economy, from extraction to waste disposal, must decrease. If we address GHG emissions in isolation from topsoil and biodiversity loss, we will fail to preserve the ecosystems on which we depend for life.
