In the sciences, I think it is widely believed that defining terms consistently is important. So it bothered me that some common performance measures in higher education could be defined in a number of different ways. I think the most egregious example is student-to-faculty ratio where both the numerator and denominator of the ratio can be defined several different ways, giving the possibility of many different ratios that can vary from low to high. On a humorous occasion, a new provost told me he needed to know the student-to-faculty ratio at the university. I told him there are many ways to calculate it and asked if he wanted a low or high ratio. He laughed and said he would be making an argument for additional faculty and would prefer a high ratio. So I used a common definition that yielded a relatively high ratio. If he had wanted to argue that the university provided a good student experience, we could have used a different definition to calculate a relatively low ratio. If you imagine having different definitions for millimeters, degrees centigrade, and kilograms you can understand why consistent definitions might matter.

That brings me to today in my retired life. I live in an older home that had one GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet to protect users of exterior and bathroom outlets from shock or electrocution in the case of a ground fault. A few years ago that GFCI outlet failed and I replaced it with a new one. A few years after that I decided to bring outlets in my kitchen up to National Electric Code (NEC) standards by installing additional GFCI outlets along my countertops. Then today I finally decided to bring my clothes washer outlet up to NEC standards by installing a GFCI outlet as a replacement for the standard outlet. Then I saw the new GFCI outlet did not have a green light illuminated like the outlets I installed in the kitchen. I almost uninstalled it for a return to the store. But then I did a little research and learned that although all the 20 ampere GFCI outlets I installed were made by the same company, I have 3 different models and the little lights mean something different on each model. Is that not something that should at least be standardized by a company and preferably across all companies?

d’Verse Quadrille

The above poem is my take on d’Verse’s Quadrille challenge.

The Quadrille is simply a poem of 44 words (excluding the title), and it can take any form. This week’s challenge was to use the word “bloom” in a Quadrille.
