A State Department statement on the matter did not accuse the three arrested of any specific unlawful or harmful acts but stated that the #Trump administration “will never allow America to become a home for foreign nationals tied to anti-American terrorist regimes.”

Mr. Hashemi is the son of Masoumeh Ebtekar, who served as the English-language spokeswoman for the #Islamist embassy captors during the 444-day hostage crisis. Mr. Hashemi had been the subject of recent reports in conservative media outlets that portrayed him as living comfortably in Los Angeles while working as a psychology professor.

#ICE agents have been turning up in cars around Somali-owned businesses and schools that teach children from immigrant backgrounds. Rightwing so-called “influencers”, including leaders at #TurningPointUSA, have followed suit.

Since then, Somali-owned businesses have struggled to attract customers and schools have closed due to low attendance fueled by the presence of federal agents and anti- #immigrant provocateurs.

Today, the #Somali community in #Columbus, which numbers around 60,000 people, is still reeling from the fallout.

The moment 19-year-old Emely Agustin spotted the group of masked #immigration agents tackling a woman face down on the pavement, her heart dropped.

She saw the woman’s red jacket.

“Oh my fucking God. That’s my mom!” she screamed.

It was the morning of 5 November in Cottage Grove, #Oregon, and masked officers with #ICE had dragged Juanita Avila out of her van. The agents pinned her down as she cried out for her daughter, who started filming. Juanita, a legal permanent resident, had her green card in her pocket, but officers handcuffed and detained her.

Nearly 30,000 Minnesotans Trained to Monitor ICE Occupation

Federal Gov’t Tries to Defuse Resistance with Cosmetic Changes. This is an article that first appeared on Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) News. It describes an explosion in the number of trained volunteer observers — now nearly 30,000 across Minnesota — who monitor and record the activities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents. This registers the breadth of popular resistance to the terror by federal thugs deployed by the Trump administration to crack down on immigrant workers and undermine everyone’s democratic rights in that state. This activity is coupled with mass protests that have included rallies by tens of thousands and walkouts by high school students after federal goons murdered in cold blood two of these volunteer observers — U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti. According to a Saturday report in the #NYT, concern over #ICE’s brutality has grown to such an extent that many #Minnesota residents, including both documented immigrants and #US citizens, have started wearing passports around their necks to avoid being potentially targeted.

CNN on Friday reported that ICE has been rounding up #refugees living in Minnesota who were allowed to enter the US after undergoing “a rigorous, years-long vetting process,” and sending them to a facility in Texas where they are being prepared for #deportation.

Intensive care nurses immediately doubted the word of federal #immigration officers when they arrived at a #Minneapolis hospital with a #Mexican #immigrant who had broken bones in his face and skull.

#ICE agents initially claimed Alberto Castañeda Mondragón had tried to flee while handcuffed and “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall,” according to court documents filed by a lawyer seeking his release.

But staff members at Hennepin County Medical Center determined that could not possibly account for the fractures and bleeding throughout the 31-year-old’s brain, said three nurses familiar with the case.

ICE presence at hospitals triggers friction with workers

Nurses in Minneapolis doubted federal immigration officers' claims about a Mexican immigrant's severe injuries. ICE agents said Alberto Castañeda Mondragón ran headfirst into a wall while handcuffed. But hospital staff found his injuries inconsistent with that account. The seemingly implausible explanation from ICE is just one example of recent encounters that have undermined the agency’s credibility at Minneapolis hospitals and contributed to mounting friction between medical staff and immigration officers. Workers at the Hennepin County facility say ICE officers have restrained patients in defiance of hospital rules and stayed at their sides for days. The agents have also lingered around the campus and pressed people for proof of citizenship.

The congresswoman did not cower behind the lectern. She instinctively lunged at her attacker with defiance and a raised fist. The shock from the assault notwithstanding, she quickly composed herself and continued her talk, brushing aside efforts by her staff and security who tried to persuade her to retreat.

“I’m built that way,” Omar said calmly as she left the community room at Urban League Twin Cities after her event, reminding a CNN reporter that she was a survivor of war.

Faced with such racist bullying, Omar showed the value of dignity and determination. All those resisting the #Trump-inspired anti-#immigrant terror can learn from her conduct. She stood tall and channeled her ire into her message.

We Stand with Congresswoman Ilhan Omar

On January 27, 2026, a man attacked U.S. congresswoman Ihan Omar while she was addressing a town hall meeting in Minneapolis, a city she represents along with a number of its suburbs. The attacker, using a syringe, sprayed Omar with a pungent liquid before he was tackled and taken away by security. There is little doubt that behind this odious assault was the unceasing bigotry and vilification of Omar and the entire Somali American community in Minnesota by U.S. president Donald Trump and much of the Republican Party establishment.
