Columbia’s capitulation has turned a #university that was once a site of free inquiry and learning into a shadow of its former self, an-anti university, a gated security zone with electronic entry controls, a place of fear and loathing, where faculty and students are told from on high what they can teach and say, under penalty of severe sanctions. Disgracefully, all of this is being done to cover up one of the greatest crimes of this century, the ongoing genocide in #Gaza, a crime in which #Columbia’s leadership is now fully complicit.

"But Mr. Khalil ... rejected the idea that protesting against #Israel is inherently #antisemitic.

“I was not doing anything antisemitic,” he said. “I was literally advocating for the right of my people. I was literally advocating for an end of a #genocide. I was advocating that the tuition fees that I and other students pay don’t go toward investing in weapons manufacturers. What’s antisemitic about this?”"

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge said the #Trump administration’s effort to deport #MahmoudKhalil because of his pro-#Palestinian activism at #ColumbiaUniversity likely violates the #Constitution.

In a lengthy order issued Wednesday, Judge Michael Farbiarz wrote the government’s primary justification for removing Khalil — that his beliefs may pose a threat to U.S. foreign policy — could open the door to vague and arbitrary enforcement.

Judge says US effort to deport Mahmoud Khalil on foreign policy grounds is likely unconstitutional

A federal judge said the Trump administration’s effort to deport Mahmoud Khalil because of his pro-Palestinian activism at Columbia University was likely unconstitutional. Judge Michael Farbiarz said Wednesday that Khalil's lawyers had not properly responded to another charge brought by the government: that Khalil had failed to disclose his involvement in activism and refugee resettlement on his permanent residency application. The judge plans to issue next steps in the coming days. Khalil, a legal U.S. resident, was detained by federal immigration agents on March 8 in the lobby of his university-owned apartment. He is first arrest under President Donald Trump’s widening crackdown on students who joined campus protests against Israel's war in Gaza.

Georgetown scholar recalls terror and 'mockery of due process' in immigration jail

A Georgetown University scholar who was targeted for deportation by the Trump administration said he was terrified in immigration jail. Badar Khan Suri told The Associated Press of using a toilet in a cramped open cell and hugging a prayer rug as if it were his son. He said it took several days to talk to his attorneys. Khan Suri was released on bond last week as his lawsuit against the U.S. government’s deportation case continues. The Trump administration denied any inhumane treatment or lack of due process. The administration said it revoked Khan Suri’s visa because he was spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism.

Project Esther: NYT Details Right-Wing Plan to “Rebrand All Critics of Israel” as Hamas Supporters

A new report in The New York Times takes a deep dive into Project Esther, a policy blueprint to crush the pro-Palestinian movement in the United States from the Heritage Foundation, the right-wing think tank best known for spearheading Project 2025. Project Esther was formed during the Biden administration and lays out plans for surveilling, silencing and punishing pro-Palestinian activists, including deporting non-U.S. citizens and withholding funds from universities. Many of the Heritage Foundation’s proposals appear to have been taken up by the Trump administration. “Project Esther aims to rebrand all critics of Israel and pro-Palestinian protesters as providing material support for terrorism,” says investigative reporter Katie Baker. “They’re very explicit that this is what they’re doing. … This is all laid out online, and it has been for months.”

"The celebrations at smaller graduation ceremonies on Tuesday were also punctuated by anger directed at Columbia administrators. At the graduation for Columbia College, the university’s main undergraduate school, some students repeatedly interrupted Ms. Shipman’s remarks with loud jeers. At one point, they chanted “Free Mahmoud.”"
