From my walk in #deerIsland in #boston

The bunny let me get within 5' of 'em. The woodpecker was a bit more stealthy but the tapping gave him away. Never saw them on the sumac before.

I previously posted a shot of the 'Deer Island Eggs', but this is a wider shot showing the entire Deer Island Complex catching a sunbeam on an otherwise overcast day. Deer Island is the second largest sewage treatment plant in the United States. The plant is a key part of the program to protect Boston Harbor from pollution from sewer systems in eastern Massachusetts

A pirate treasure is rumored to be buried somewhere on Mississippi's Deer Island, but it has never been found. According to local legend, this treasure is guarded by a headless skeleton who chases away anyone who gets too close to its hiding place. #MythologyMonday

Had a fabulous #FieldTrip today with Long Now Boston folks. We toured the #DeerIsland wastewater treatment plant. Yes, Long Now Boston is a nerd club.

But it gives me hope: some really smart, thoughtful, and capable people are keeping our infrastructure going and planning for #ClimateChange--no matter what the other noise around is.

Great tour, take one if you get the chance. #BostonMA

Deer Island forms the north east boundary of Boston Harbor. It became connected to the mainland during the 1938 New England hurricane. It has served many functions over the years. During King Philips War in the 1670's it was used as an internment camp for displaced Native Americans. In the mid-1800's an almshouse was constructed for paupers and to quarantine thousands of refugees from the Great Famine of Ireland. In 1896, the almshouse was converted to the Deer Island House of Correction, which was in operation until 1991. A sewage treatment plant for the city of Boston was constructed on the island in the late 1800's. During World War II, the island was the home of Fort Dawes, a U.S. Army Coast Artillery station. The sewage treatment plant was replaced by a modern facility in the 1990's. While very little of the original land of the island hasn't been extensively modified over the years, it's coastline still show's hints of it past, such as old pier pilings and giant granite blocks that once formed wharves and seawalls. #deerisland #bostonharbor

OK, you get ONE wave from #boston harbor on this rather nice daylight savings morning.... But, you get it in 4K!

From #DeerIsland

It's a good day for the surfers out on Winthrop Beach.
