#Decomposing #deadwood is a #biodiversityhotspot; many small #organisms are either direct #decomposers or closely ecologically related to these primary decomposers. This #riparianforest in Saarland, #Germany, remains partly uncontrolled and is thus full of deadwood in different stages of decomposition. The authors T. Löfroth et al. (2023) studied #factors such as #globalwarming negatively affecting deadwood #ecosystems.

The amazing world of fungi – in pictures

Dr Tom May, a mycologist at the Royal Botanic Gardens and an expert witness at the Erin Patterson trial, has collaborated with renowned fungi photographer Stephen Axford and writer Catherin Marciniak for Planet Fungi, a new book from CSIRO Publishing full of incredible macro-photography

Fungi are heterotrophic, meaning they cannot produce their own food like plants. Instead, they obtain nutrients by breaking down organic matter from other organisms. Fungi achieve this through external digestion: they release enzymes into their environment to decompose dead material, absorbing the nutrients. This makes them essential decomposers in ecosystems, recycling nutrients and contributing to soil health. #Heterotrophic #Decomposers #Ecosystems https://fungiape.com/are-fungi-heterotrophs/

Here is that time of the year where i can easily spot pea flowers (Fabaceae or Leguminosae) and fence them from the upcoming mower or grass shearer.

Not planting forest corridors:
"Natural corridors (those existing in landscapes prior to the study) showed more movement than manipulated corridors (those created and maintained for the study)."

#Drought effects on decomposition are mitigated by an increasingly complex decomposer community. The more species of decomposer organisms there are, the less the essential process of recycling nutrients is affected by the lack of water.

Your microbes live on after you die − a microbiologist explains how your necrobiome recycles your body to nourish new life

Raw Story - Celebrating 19 Years of Independent Journalism

I can't wait for bug season. Right now, I still have to turn over wood and dig around for them. Today, other than moss, the star at the farm were these pillbugs, wood lice, whatever you call them where you're from. All the thousands of times I've seen them in my life, I don't know if I've ever actually looked one in the eyes until today.

"We typically think of fungi as #decomposers, but they are cryptic and do many different things. Fungi can also function as nutrient cyclers, #pathogens, and #mutualists that live in a beneficial association with plants and other organisms."

Understanding the cryptic role fungi play in ecosystems

When you say "fungi," most people think of mushrooms, showy fruiting bodies, but most fungi do not produce mushrooms. It is estimated that there are approximately 3 to 13 million fungal species on Earth, many of which are microscopic in size.
