#DecemberDiceDiary2023 Day 31!

Reflect on your #ttrpg journeys this year. What are your goals for the next?

I'm running three campaigns and I'm doing great in some, others I feel like I'm not having a proper grip on. I know what I'm doing right and wrong, so coming up: More doing things right, less doing things wrong!

Also upcoming I hope our actual play campaign will become a reality :) Been working on it a bit, and I'm excited to take this stuff public!

#DecemberDiceDiary2023 Day 29!

"Describe your most memorable critical success or failure!"

With a new group as the DM, one of the players managed to crit on trying to throw a severed zombie arm at another zombie. This lead to the arm going through the other zombies eye, destroying the brain and creature.

It was one of the first times they just tried something beyond "I use my dagger" and it worked out wonderfully. The players still remember it today.

#DecemberDiceDiary2023 Day 28!

What's a unique monster you've encountered or created?

I think that little title goes to the Knucklebiter Gnat. It's a very weak little creature, but it will drive the party insane, if they don't deal with it. It's the kind of monster that gets your table to just groan the second you describe it's signature buzzing in the tent or room they're aiming to spend the night in:

#DecemberDiceDiary2023 Day 26!

"What tips do you have for new players or DMs?"

Honestly, communication is more crucial than anything in #ttrpg settings. Everyone is making themselves a little vulnerable by stepping into this silly space and acting out something. Not only that, but there will be emotional attachments.

If there is any issue at all be it as a player or DM, talking about it openly and honestly is the most important thing in my opinion.

#DecemberDiceDiary2023 Day 25!

"Share a heartwarming in-game story from your adventures!"

It went from heart wrenching to heart warming. A former soldier artificer accidentially killed a little critter friend of the party. It could be saved, but they were deeply shook. An NPC they had saved took the time to reassure them and reaffirm them, appealing to their sense of duty and discipline, while showing empathy.

#DecemberDiceDiary2023 Day 24!

Merry Christmas everyone :)

"Describe your ideal TTRPG holiday special session!"

Honestly, it'd be something silly, something a little different from what they usually are. Less production quality, less earnestness and just something to relax and get into the spirit of the season. Warm lighting, good tea and just time with friends.

Maybe a snowball fight as the combat portion of the session. That'd be fun!

#DecemberDiceDiary2023 Day 23!

"What's the most memorable in-game decision you made and its consequences?"

After having the arm of the Barbarian restored by a devil posing as a minor god with only that city worshiping and giving sacrifices to him; my character decided to take over the religion and build a new power base to reclaim his own lost titles.

The city then became the focal point of the campaign. The DM admitted he had only really created it to help restore the Barbarian.

#DecemberDiceDiary2023 Day 22!

"How do you deal with player conflict at the table?"

I am lucky and rarely have that. So far any hiccups have been resolved with unabashed honesty (though wrapped up nicely where possible) and just straight out addressing any issue. Usually it's about a player wanting more than I am willing to grant as the DM. Communication is key and cannot be substituted with anything else.

What about you?

#DecemberDiceDiary2023 Day 21!

What's your favorite magical item you've encountered or created?

That'd be a sword serving two masters, the goddess of life and the god of death. The wielder had to roll a d6 and for uneven the god of death would take over, dealing extra damage against servants of life and attempting to avoid hitting servants of death and vice versa.

I always described what happened differently, like the sword becoming a stick, etc.

Player was very confused :D

#DecemberDiceDiary2023 Day 20!

"Share your most epic boss fight experience!"

The Paladins sword borrowed itself into the huge fungus monster and as they pulled it back out, I told them something black creeps up their arm and let them decide what would happen. They chose that it left a black mark. I ruled the mark to be of the god of death. But they were sworn to the goddess of life, causing a crisis of faith.

Ever since then, I've given players way more agency.
