I'm gonna lean into my feelings and #DecRec this article that has been stuck in my mind since I first read it in what... 2021? I probably reread it once a year.
"The Toxoplasma of Rage" is an article written by a psychologist in 2014 about how (or why?) the media has become so darn good at making people argue and being nasty with each other about the most unproductive topics, rendering people incapable of reaching reasonable agreements, thereby benefiting the corporations where this discourse happens.
The article uses various examples related to activism, from PETA, to police brutality, to Tumblr's social justice efforts.
Gonna share a quote that stuck with me: "It’s in activists’ interests to destroy their own causes by focusing on the most controversial cases and principles, the ones that muddy the waters and make people oppose them out of spite. And it’s in the media’s interest to help them and egg them on.."
