American chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky dies at 29

A chess grandmaster who started as a child prodigy and quickly became one of the most influential American voices in the sport has died at age 29. Daniel Naroditsky became a grandmaster at the age of 18. That's the highest title in chess aside from World Champion. The Charlotte Chess Center in North Carolina announced Naroditsky's death Monday on social media. The cause of death was not immediately known. Fellow grandmasters credited Naroditsky with introducing the sport to a wider audience by livestreaming many of his matches. Other elite chess players took to social media to express their shock and sadness.

Nebojsa Pavkovic, Serbian general convicted of war crimes, dies at 79

A former Serbian army chief who was convicted by a U.N. court for war crimes during the war in Kosovo has died. Nebojsa Pavkovic died in Belgrade at age 79 less than a month after being freed from a prison in Finland where he had been serving a 22-year sentence for the atrocities against ethnic Albanians during the 1998-99 conflict. Pavkovic commanded the Serb-led Yugoslav army troops in Kosovo during a Serbian crackdown on separatist ethnic Albanian forces who launched a rebellion to gain independence for the territory which was part of Serbia at the time.

Former Buccaneers All-Pro running back Doug Martin dies at 36

Doug Martin, a former All-Pro running back with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has died. He was 36. His family said in a statement to Fox Sports that Martin died Saturday morning and the cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Martin was picked 31st overall in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft after a standout career at Boise State. He rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns as a rookie to earn a Pro Bowl berth. He had 1,402 yards rushing and six TDs in 2015 when he made the Pro Bowl and was first-team All-Pro.

Warren McVea, first Black player to get a football scholarship at a major Texas school, dies at 79

Warren McVea, the speedy running back who was the first Black player to receive a football scholarship to a major Texas school and later helped Kansas City win its first Super Bowl title, died Sunday after a long illness. He was 79. McVea’s daughter, Tracey Ellis, said he died at home in Los Angeles surrounded by family members. From San Antonio, McVea starred at the University of Houston before joining Cincinnati in 1968 in the AFL. He moved to Kansas City the following season, with the Chiefs beating Minnesota 23-7 in the Super Bowl. Under coach Bill Yeoman at Houston, McVea had a school-record 3,009 all-purpose yards in 1966. In the first football game played on artificial turf, he had a 99-yard scoring catch.

Former MLB player Jesús Montero dies in Venezuela after motorcycle crash

Jesús Montero, a Venezuelan who once played for the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, died Sunday following a traffic accident in his country two weeks ago, the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League said. He was 35. The former catcher’s motorcycle reportedly crashed into a truck on Oct. 4 and he had been hospitalized ever since in critical condition. Montero played 18 games for the Yankees in the 2011 season. He played 208 games with the Mariners, ending in 2015. In his brief major league career, he batted .253, hit 28 home runs and had 104 RBI. The Venezuelan Professional Baseball League said Sunday that Montero leaves “behind a legacy of effort and passion for the game.”
