Context: Constance Georgine Markievicz was an Irish revolutionary nationalist politician, suffragist and socialist. Born in London, she came from the upper class Anglo-Irish Protestant landowning elite, which she abandoned in favour of Irish independence and social reform.

She was a key figure in the 1916 Easter Rising, serving as a lieutenant in the Irish Citizen Army and fighting at St Stephen’s Green under Michael Mallin. She helped organize rebel positions, trained volunteers, and remained in command even after heavy British bombardment forced a retreat to the Royal College of Surgeons.

Sentenced to death for her role, her sentence was commuted to life imprisonment due to her gender. She later became the first woman elected to the British Parliament (1918) and served as Ireland’s first female cabinet minister as Minister for Labour during the War of Independence.
