Back in January 2024 when I saw #DeadSkyPublishing would be accepting submissions for an anthology of cold-themed horror, I started work on a new story. It would be a fictionalized version of something that really happened to me in my hometown of Calumet City, Illinois. When I was around eleven, a man in a sedan offered me a ride to my friend’s house. I didn’t take the bait…but what if I had? I soon learned that writing about what *might’ve* happened if I’d been abducted really creeped me out.

“Find a Boy” begins with a kid named Dan escaping from his abductor’s car, but he’s in the middle of nowhere during a blizzard. The story gets increasingly dark from there.

Absolute Zero from Death’s Head Press is now available in bookstores. Get it before the weather turns colder—but maybe read it by the fire.

I’ve included a picture of me at that age, with a street view image of the actual location where the person offered me the ride. Seeing the area again as an adult is chilling because it makes me wonder if the creepy guy found a different kid that day.

Stephen King’s writing has gotten me through hard times. The toughest was when my father died, so my memories of the last three months of 1985 are foggy. What I do know is The Bachman Books was released October 4, 1985, the day before my life was shattered. In the months that followed, I turned to my favorite author’s prose to escape the pain of losing my old man.

For context, The Long Walk was actually King’s first novel, written as a freshman at the University of Maine. It was published under his Richard Bachman pseudonym when he was 31, and released under his real name seven years later. I recall blowing through the pages of this dystopian, hellish walking contest. The story was bleak and grueling and hopeless…and it felt like my life at the time. In other words: I got exactly what I needed, when I needed it.

I have a story of my own coming out on October 28 in the #DeadSkyPublishing anthology Absolute Zero. “Find a Boy” is inspired by The Long Walk—and I mean *directly* inspired. In a way, it’s like if the Walk was a run through snow, but my protagonist is being chased.

I’ll always have Mr. King to thank for getting me through the worst period of my life. His words cut through the dark fog and kept me plodding forward, ever forward.

My story "Find a Boy” can be found in Absolute Zero, an anthology of cold horror. It was inspired by a chilling, true event from my childhood when a stranger pulled up in a sedan and asked if I wanted a ride to my friend’s house. Coming from #DeadSkyPublishing on October 7.
