Apple reveals it bowed to Kremlin pressure to remove 190 apps from Russian App Store over three years - Mander

cross-posted from: https://mander.xyz/post/49757044 [https://mander.xyz/post/49757044] > Apple removed 190 apps from its Russian App Store at the request of Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor between 2022 and 2024, the company’s own annual transparency reports for those three years show. > > Though the number of apps removed from the Russian App Store has risen every year, that number rose hugely in 2024, when the Russian authorities began cracking down far more aggressively on online freedoms than it previously had done. > > After removing just seven apps in 2022, and 12 in 2023, Apple deleted 171 apps in 2024, meaning that Russia ranked second only to China by the number of apps removed at the request of the authorities. > > In the vast majority of cases — 182 out of 190 — Roskomnadzor invoked the same piece of Russian legislation setting out the grounds for blocking websites in its requests to the US tech giant. These range from the dissemination of materials by “undesirable organisations” to incitement to terrorism. A further seven apps were removed for breaching Russian financial laws, specifically to combat illegal securities trading, online fraudsters and the theft of personal data. > > … > > Web Archive link [https://web.archive.org/web/20260331132155/https://novayagazeta.eu/articles/2026/03/31/apple-reveals-it-bowed-to-kremlin-pressure-to-remove-190-apps-from-russian-app-store-over-three-years-en-news] > > … > > As an addition, it is noteworthy that Apple is (in-)famous to bow to pressure from the Chinese Communist Party. Apple is just aging out. Sad, but a normal process when a company gets run by its shareholders.

So should we expect Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro to go too?

Apple Discontinues Mac Pro - Slashdot

Apple has discontinued the Mac Pro and says it has no plans for future models. "The 'buy' page on Apple's website for the Mac Pro now redirects to the Mac's homepage, where all references have been removed," reports 9to5Mac. From the report: The Mac Pro has lived many lives over the years. Apple re...

I'm so tired of the crap going on due to closed #mobile computing, and even linux phones are never that open/upgradeable, that all I want is that someone would make an open low-power board that would have:
- 1 SODIMM;
- 1 M.2 NVMe (or maybe an eMMC for lower power/size?);
- 1 processor module (in whatever reusable connector);
- 1 M.2 whatever LTE/5G module
- 1 open MCU (RPI2040?)
- 3 USB-C ports: USB3.0 (maybe with PD out), USB3.0 (with PD in) and AltDisplay.
- a couple of buttons and a mini OLED display

One could attach a keyboard, a monitor and some power source and have a computer. With a small powerbank we could have a dumb phone (earbuds are ubiquitous now).

But most importantly, we could ditch the fuck out of smartphones and apps that are only good for useless consumption and #surveillance/ being controlled (everytime I want to do productivity on my phone I'm better off turning on a computer and using a fucking keyboard anyway!).

Am I alone in this? What do you think @mntmn?

So I’ve been looking around and it seems Proton is the best option to move a family off the Apple and Google cloud. I have not seen self hosting options, and I am unsure of how wise it would be anyway (I dabble, but I am definitely not a sysadmin). Unfortunately it seems the Proton CEO is a Trump fan so my trust in them has already taken a big hit. Is this unreasonable? So far I have been unable to find anything similar to what they offer.

The last two Apple products we use in our house are two HomePods, and an AppleTV.

I'm replacing the HomePods with two audioengine HD5 speakers. Not huge speakers, but we have humble needs.

I really look forward to just syncing audio via Bluetooth, with no "smart" features, and...

NO MICROPHONES!
