I have to admit that the Turkey Vulture is sort of cute. We have seen them over the couple of years that we have been visiting the refuge and they always seem to be in pairs. And when they are soaring, their wings look pretty awesome.

Upside is that most tiles are still as they were 🙃

Downside is that I either have to use WiFi to connect my server with the network (and I have to add a WiFi card/USB stick for that) or have to open up the ground myself and dig the tube + cable in myself.

I have been in the groundwork myself, but adding WiFi will make the server more flexibel in its placement đŸ€”

— and RAID10 instead of RAID6 because I think the probability of 2 drives in the same vdev failing right after eachother is too low and the #resilvering in a #RAID1 vdev is a lot quicker and less wearing of the other drive.

Also read/write performance will be a lot better with both decisions

So another update from me, because sometimes things go slow. I've booted a #NixOS live image and the #badblocks program is running a check of my four 4TB drives (been running for 86 hrs and done 84% I think the last time I checked).

I did change my decision to use #NILFS2 & #RAID6. After deliberate consideration I've switched my choice to #ZFS with #RAID10.
— no longer NILFS2 because it doesn't have compression and ZFS even includes the kitchen sink
