Government using national security as ‘smokescreen’ in Apple encryption row | Computer Weekly
Senior Conservative MP David Davis told Computer Weekly there was “no credible case” for the government to refuse to tell Parliament how many notices it issues each year to telecoms and internet companies.
“The government is being dishonest in its use of ‘national security’ as a smokescreen to avoid telling the public how often it has ordered tech companies to hand over data or undermine encryption,” he said.

For Davis this is a brilliant profile raising incident:
on the one hand, he can burnish his claim to be a proper 'hard man' not like the suit wearing pretenders who are all talk;
on the other, its a good downpayment on any prospective return of compassion to UK #politics.
I'm not so cynical to suggest this is why he intervened but its likely served him well!
