I bought the box a few years ago ❤️
I wonder if the copy I had as a kid didn't have the novel.
It's amazing to think that such a game could fit on a single-sided floppy disk 😮 (720 KB!)

Happy 40th Anniversary Elite!🚀
---
#Elite was the first of a long and proud line of #SpaceSimulators. #IanBell and #DavidBraben’s creation was the main source of inspiration for games such as #Echelon, #SpaceRogue, #MicrosoftSpaceSimulator and #Freelancer.
It established 3 big staples of modern #GameDevelopment:The #OpenWorld format, #WireFrame #3DGraphics, and procedurally generated levels. #EliteDangerous

@markmoxon Oh man, how I do love me some Virus and Zarch (Lander's big brother (for others who may be reading))!

Written by #IanBell and #DavidBraben while they were studying at the #UK's #UniversityOfCambridge, #Elite was launched with huge razzmatazz by #Acornsoft, was shipped with a superb user manual and even a novella to explain the universe. The original Elite ended up selling an estimated one million units. (That's chicken feed today, but in 1980s computing that was a huge number.) #RetroGaming #EliteDangerous #SpaceSims

@Crow74 It was indeed called Virus on the Amiga, Atari ST, etc. It was a simplified version of Zarch; the Acorn Archimedes was notably more powerful than the others, and couldn't quite handle Zarch.
I compared them a while back on my #blog.

I’ve long considered Virus one of my very favorite videogames. Developed by David Braben (whose latest is Kinectimals) and published for the Amiga, Atari ST, and PC in 1988 by Firebird, Virus was one of the first filled-vector 3D games ever made. … Continue reading →
