Heads up, folks:

Michael Kan reports that National Public Data is back under new owners: https://www.pcmag.com/news/site-behind-major-ssn-leak-returns-with-detailed-data-on-millions-how-to

Here is the direct link to their opt-out page instructions:

I had opted out previously after their humongous #databreach last year. When I checked my name now, it did not find my profile, so if you opted out before, you may still be opted out, but better safe than sorry: check and opt-out if needed.

My spouse attempted to commit suicide about a month ago. This is not the kind of thing I would normally share on Mastodon, but it has led to something that I need to share. I am in my early 30s and my partner is in their mid 20s. Neither of us has any known health condition that would make one assume we were not long for this world. Ever since my partner's recent attempt, we have started getting a new kind of mail: targeted advertisements for cremation and burial services. Of course, these are only in my partner's name, making it obvious that this is not some kind of grim coincidence.

I am livid, and I want to publicly shame these companies (see photos for names and addresses), but I know that they must be using some marketing service, which is pulling from some dataset sold by some data broker. I know there is not only one person involved in this, but there are humans who made decisions that directly resulted in this harassment of a suicidal person. This harassment is a crime that any healthy society would rectify swiftly. Unfortunately, we are American, so I have little recourse other than to make this post.

Saying: “why does it matter if you got nothing to hide” is on so many levels relevant and deeply black humor cynical.

Data Brokers are Selling Your Flight Information to CBP and ICE

For many years, data brokers have existed in the shadows, exploiting gaps in privacy laws to harvest our information—all for their own profit. They sell our precise movements without our knowledge or meaningful consent to a variety of private and state actors, including law enforcement agencies....
