🚀 Oh, wow! Our hero bravely slashes hosting costs from "I'm buying a yacht" to "I can afford decent coffee" without anyone noticing. 🦸‍♂️ Meanwhile, 248 GB of data tiptoed across the internet like a stealthy ninja—because obviously, nothing says cutting-edge tech like switching providers to save a buck. 🤑

Are there any good ways of securely transferring files between two parties that don't necessarily trust each other fully?

I was at the local bank office yesterday to hand in a stack of printed papers that they needed to assess my suitability as a customer. I had previously tried to hand those same papers digitally. Both on a USB stick and on my phone.

File Transfer - Yet my personal implementation would have been slightly different than the qs. One end sets port and send or receive. Then the other send sets remote-host and send or receive with code (TLS/PAKE) and that’s all it takes. Either sending or receiving end can run the listen socket, and the encryption is authenticated with shared code, after connection has been formed, then it checks just which way the data should flow and get’s it done with resume / integrity logic. I think qs is better in the situations where UDP works.

qs aka quick-send - Tired of wrestling with overly complex file transfer tools? Solution, the hidden gem of A-to-B file transfers.

While alternatives like croc and magic-wormhole often suffer from frustrating UX—requiring extensive manuals, relay configurations, slowness, custom scripts, and firewall tweaks—qs focuses on simplicity and actually works.

Why qs stands out:

  • Zero installation: Ships as a single binary without unnecessary bloat.
  • Frictionless UX: No 50-page man pages or complex setup instructions; just run and transfer.
  • Reliability: Cuts out the hours of frustration and failed attempts common with over-engineered solutions.

If you need a tool that simply does exactly what it is supposed to do, check out the project and its excellent feature comparison checklist here: https://github.com/maxomatic458/quic-send

RSYNC Made Easy: Copy and Sync Files Without Losing Data

RSYNC is an amazing tool to transfer large amounts of data between devices. It supports incremental data transfer. If transfer is interrupted, you can re-run the transfer, and it will be restarted from where it left off.

Want IRC now I know what it is (Internet Relay Chat) & what it does: so much more than chat/instant messaging, like file sharing, data transfer, etc.
Great story to it too: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRC
Time to make a comeback 😁

I don’t think this is “Old man shouting at cloud” - it’s a different (more lively) way of being
& it’s good to read about it. 🙂 Expands our possibilities.

Pushed me to look up IRC (Internet Relay Chat) (seen the acronym often but never knew what it stands for, but pretty sure it wasn’t International Red Cross 🫢). Learn that it’s a “text-based chat system for instant messaging… designed for group communication in discussion forums [channels] but also allows one-on-one communication via private messages as well as chat and data transfer including file sharing.

Say it again: Expands our possibilities. 😁
