TIL one of my favorite movies, The Parent Trap, was based on a German book and movie. There are twelve adaptations of this book listed and I feel a powerful urge to watch them all, though none will ever replace the Hayley Mills version in my heart.

"The book originally started out during World War II as an aborted movie scenario. In 1942, when for a brief time Kästner was allowed by the Nazi authorities to work as a screenwriter, he proposed it to Josef von Báky, under the title The Great Secret, but the Nazis once again forbade him to work. After the war, Kästner worked the idea into the highly successful book."

Der Fall des doppelten Lottchens wäre eigentlich ein Fall fürs Jugendamt. Die Mädels werden jeweils eines Elternteils und sich gegenseitig beraubt. Ein totaler Verstoß gegen die Rechte der beiden Mädchen.
