Winter has arrived in the bog garden ❄️
My cobra lilies (Darlingtonia californica) are handling the snow beautifully - these unique North American pitcher plants are remarkably cold-hardy and actually need a winter dormancy period to thrive. The pitchers may look a bit weathered, but the rhizomes underground are safely dormant, waiting for spring to produce fresh new growth.
Darlingtonia are native to cold mountain streams in California and Oregon, so they're well-adapted to freezing temperatures. As long as the roots don't completely dry out, they'll emerge stronger when warmer days return. 🌱

Mijn cobraplanten (Darlingtonia californica) verdragen de sneeuw uitstekend - deze unieke Noord-Amerikaanse bekerplanten zijn opmerkelijk winterhard en hebben zelfs een winterrust nodig om goed te gedijen. De bekers zien er misschien wat verweerd uit, maar de wortelstokken onder de grond zijn veilig in rust, wachtend op de lente om verse nieuwe groei te produceren.
Darlingtonia zijn afkomstig van koude bergstromen in Californië en Oregon, dus ze zijn goed aangepast aan vriestemperaturen. Zolang de wortels niet volledig uitdrogen, komen ze sterker terug wanneer warmere dagen terugkeren. 🌱

My Darlingtonia californica are showing the full spectrum of autumn transition right now. Some of the older pitchers have already died back, their pale forms a reminder of the season's change, while newer traps still stand tall and vibrant with their characteristic cobra-like hoods. This mix of old and new growth creates an interesting contrast - life and decay side by side, both equally part of the natural cycle of these fascinating carnivorous plants.

Sommige oudere bekers zijn al afgestorven, hun bleke vormen een herinnering aan de seizoensverandering, terwijl nieuwere vallen nog steeds trots en levendig rechtop staan met hun karakteristieke cobra-achtige kappen. Deze mix van oude en nieuwe groei creëert een interessant contrast - leven en verval naast elkaar, beide even zeer onderdeel van de natuurlijke cyclus van deze fascinerende vleesetende planten.

The Darlingtonia (cobra lily) carnivorous plant is thriving! I got her last September so she's been largely dormant until now.

These plant friends are outside only. They like cold water as they grow near glaciers, like shade or partial sunlight, and are native to California, Washington, and Oregon. But buy yours from a reputable plant breeder and grower and don't poach.
