This cutie is the unfortunately named Bastard snake, the Malpolon monspessulanus. Found in the Mediterranean mountains. One of the beliefs about this species is that it is able to bite its own tail to form a wheel and chase very fast prey. That would make it pain indeed, but the poor snake does not actually do this.
