@Pepijn and skat, being a tax or a fine or a penalty is what evolved in English into scot-free.
After a brush with the Danish authorities and courts the English peasants talked of coming away skat-free which over many centuries became scot-free.

@_Davidsmith Wow. In Swedish, it is “ströva" and probably similar in the other Scandinavian languages. Got to have roots from back when they had a lot of contact with the old norse. #Danelaw #Danelagh
