A story from earlier this millenium 🙂
I was listening to NPO Radio on my way to take out the trash and buy some groceries.
And it reminded me one thing I've noticed back in early 2000s when I was doing DX-ing on medium waves (yes, back then it was a thriving radio band that was surprisingly alive and provided various radio stations from all over the Europe).
And one of the stations was NOS Radio (I think it was the "5", but who knows, after all those years - but the frequency was either 747 or 1008, one of those powerful transmitters in the NL) and you know, the reception on medium waves on a long distance listening wasn't the greatest so that influecened the comprehension - yet I was still amazed by what kind of language is this?
Half of the sentence sounded like english and than boom - all those "ch" and "g" sounds of dutch. And you know, I was happy I knew a bit of english (although, I'm also surprised by how much I was able to write in english without any translators or AI, just with the pure effort) so that transmission was always a mystery.
And I was listening to a radio programme about the sexuality with certain diseases and the same memory popped out - is this partially in english? Of course, my current knowledge of english rejected that idea, but still. End of story.
