10 years ago, I finished building a pair of AT-SW speakers, and they still sound so good that I felt the project was worth sharing again.
Instead of using traditional MDF, I chose to build the cabinets from fiber-reinforced gypsum boards (Knauf Floorboard GF25 and GF19). The material is much heavier than MDF but can be cut and drilled in a very similar way. The front baffle is a sandwich construction, while the cabinets are internally lined with bitumen and acoustic damping material.
The result was a pair of speakers weighing around 29 kg (64 lbs) each. That's quite heavy, but the mass helps reduce cabinet vibrations and contributes to a very solid enclosure.
The sound quality exceeded my expectations and even outperformed my previous Audiovector S1 Signature speakers. It's a great example of how much performance you can achieve with a well-designed DIY speaker kit.
