The floor of the Hoffer Brook culvert under the A10 was absolutely covered in these small life forms - with the young Chabot Bullhead (Cottus perifretum) for scale - which I've never seen before. Could they be the larvae of Ephydra shore/brine flies @[email protected]? #riverflies #diptera 8/23

The Batman Hoverfly (Myathropa florea) is easily recognised from the famous batman symbol on its thorax. This species prefers woodland areas but favours feeding on umbellifers usually found on woodland margins. Larvae feed on bacteria in damp rot-holes or crevices near the base of trees.

Marmalade Hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus) is one of the most common and easily recognised hoverflies in the UK. The yellow and black colouration gives the overall impression of a wasp-like insect, but this is a harmless pollen feeder, making it an example of Batesian mimicry.
