So this coming week I am using up some of my remaining annual leave, before the new financial year.

I have a bunch of IT related projects to catch up with, including:

Yet another desktop AMD PC to assemble,

An interesting AMD based mini-PC to install Linux on,

Hardware upgrades on my Windows PC

Sort though all the hardware I have finished testing and get it listed on eBay for sale.

I do have a 32 GByte Kit of DDR5 6400 M/T CAS 32 DIMMS for sale (2x16 GBytes) in white from Corsair. Tested on an AMD AM5 based system, and they work, although they only have XMP settings (not EXPO).

If anyone in the UK has a need for this kit, please shoot me a competitive price and we can do a deal! 😊

The #sketchy characters really should give up on strip-mining #copper pipe and wire from buildings and construction sites.

I'm going to be disappointed in them if they don't move to breaking into #datacenters and stealing #DIMMs out of running #servers.

Part 4/4 following up on the thread:
The continuing efforts with the #ThinkPad #W510: Though that 32GB tested out fine with #MEMTest86plus v7, that does not mean the #BIOS and other circuitry in a W510 can handle 32GB. Thanks to the local vintage computing group cluing me in that e820 BIOS routines were not tested against 32 GB of physical memory. If wonky, then that could confuse the bootloader – the issues I was running into.

On their suggestion, I replaced the #DIMMs with four (4) 4GB DIMMs totaling 16GB. Ran #MEMTest86+ and they passed.

Reinitiated the #Win11 install, and the install worked! But like the #Win10 #x86 install I had on here previously; #Windows is dog slow on this laptop. It was usable, was able to update the latest patches and such, but painful and not the end user experience I wanted. With only a i7 1.6Ghz processor, this may be the cutoff for usability. Any of the i5 or i7 ThinkPads with >2Ghz processors ran Win11 with minimal issues and certainly not with this slowness I experienced.

So, I have re-thought my plans for this #laptop reinstalling #debian latest and thinking about what to do next for my workbench needs. Need to do some research on which other #Lenovo #thinkpads have #eSATA ports which would have faster processors than this W510.

I think that #CAMM is a bad design compared to #SODIMM & #DIMM...

Still, just gimme regular-ass socketed Chips & #DIMMs ffs!

  • Also we don't need to make the THINN-nest machines ffs - just make them #repairable and #serviceable and #upgradeable, because #AntiRepairDesign is way more unsustainable than the 0,1% of idiots who give a shit about whether their #DDR5-RAM can do 6400MT/s or 4800MT/s, simply because most users won't notice that at all (unlike switching from a 2,5" #SATA-#HDD running at 5400rpm to an #NVMe-#SSD that maxes out #PCIe 4x connections.

#FACT: #RAM & #SSD|s are inevitably dying due to age and use and like #ThermalPaste need to be #replaceable for a device to work longterm!

I'd rather have a #THICC af #laptop that actually survives my daily use than some flimsy #tablet that snaps in half if I sneeze at it.

  • No seriously, most devices can't even fit proper ports and cooling fans for no good reason whatsoever!

Also I think it's insulting to frame basic things like "stability" as a negative.
