The #OpenSource Maintenance Instrument addresses a structural gap that has defined our work from the beginning: critical open source infrastructure creates public value, yet is often underfunded and institutionally fragile.
The strategy also calls for coordinating shared open #DigitalInfrastructure across Member States through the #DigitalCommons #EDIC. This work is already underway. The Sovereign Tech Agency has helped shape the #DCEDIC from day one... 2/

The European Sovereign Tech Fund #EUSTF pilot is a key step toward coordinated European investment in critical open digital infrastructure. We're glad to see this take shape within the #DCEDIC -- and to be leading the pilot.

Today, the #EU will launch a new legal entity aimed at supporting the development of the #DigitalCommons.
The so-called European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (#EDIC) is a legal instrument that allows EU countries to pool resources and "coordinate with communities to develop, maintain and scale digital commons and facilitate their uptake."
Depending on who leads it, this #DCEDIC might become something great, or it could end in failure just as #GaiaX did. 🍿
On 29 October, the European Commission adopted a decision establishing the Digital Commons European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (DC-EDIC), a new instrument enabling Member States to jointly develop, deploy and operate cross-border digital infrastructures with dedicated governance and legal personality.
Tomorrow in The Hague, EU Member States launch a new international organisation, one that invests in and cares for #DigitalCommons and open source. The EDIC for Digital Commons is a long term commitment and strategy to help governments transition to open source, work with the communities and strengthen the ecosystem. Much needed.
