Il segretario dalla Difesa Usa, Pete Hegseth, ha ordinato il ritiro di circa 5.000 soldati americani present in Germania. Un portavoce del Pentagono ha spiegato all'agenzia tedesca Dpa che il ritiro dovrebbe essere completato entro i prossimi sei, dodici mesi. Per il Pentagono si tratta di una decisione che "segue un'attenta revisione della presenza delle forze del Dipartimento in Europa", dettata "da esigenze operative e condizioni sul campo". Secondo dati militari Usa di metà aprile, sono circa 86.000 i militari americani in Europa, circa 39.000 dei quali in Germania. I numeri cambiano costantemente, in parte per motivi di rotazione e per le esercitazioni militari. Nei giorni scorsi il presidente Donald Trump aveva minacciato il ritiro delle truppe americane in Germania, Italia e Spagna.

"Questo aggiustamento sottolinea la necessità per l'Europa di continuare a investire di più nella difesa e di assumersi una maggiore responsabilità nella nostra difesa comune", ha aggiunto, dopo che il Pentagono ieri ha anticipato il ritiro di 5mila militari americani dalla Germania da qui a un anno, in seguito alle parole di Donald Trump.

A Pentagon spokesperson told the German news agency Dpa that the withdrawal should be completed within the next six to twelve months. For the Pentagon, this is a decision that “follows a careful review of the Department’s forces presence in Europe,” driven by “operational needs and field conditions.” According to U.S. military data from mid-April, there are approximately 86,000 American military personnel in Europe, around 39,000 of whom are in Germany. The numbers are constantly changing, partly due to rotation and military exercises. In recent days, President Donald Trump had threatened the withdrawal of American troops from Germany, Italy, and Spain.

NATO “is cooperating with the United States to better understand the details of their decision to withdraw American troops from Germany announced by Washington,” said NATO spokesperson Allison Hart on X. “This adjustment highlights the need for Europe to continue investing more in defense and to assume greater responsibility in our shared defense,” she added, following the Pentagon’s announcement yesterday of the withdrawal of 5,000 American military personnel from Germany within a year, in response to Donald Trump’s words.
