In between downpours today I was able to take a hike, stay dry and see Cypripedium acaule, the Pink Lady Slipper orchid.

This species thrives in acidic soils with low soil microbial activity. In higher PH soils with more mycorrhizal activity, the species will often rot.

Not rare but less common due to human activity and being browsed by mammals.

First bloom on my Yellow Lady Slipper (Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens) this year. When I got the plant last year, the blooms were a bit past prime, so it's nice to see a fresh flower! This was a wild cluster of plants rescued from construction under permit by Orchids Limited.
