The ODT story includes details of which way each councillor voted - I’m taking note so I don’t accidentally rank any anti-cycleway councillors in the upcoming elections. Mind you, you can probably guess who they were if you know anything about Ōtepoti local politics.

Wheels come off Dunedin cycleway as Radich swings vote

A contentious Dunedin cycleway project has been axed by the mayor’s casting vote during a high-drama council meeting. Mayor Jules Radich’s casting...

How frustrating - such a close vote too 😭

Gotta save a few car parks over safe cycling and walking though 😡

Editing to add the headline as it doesn’t seem to be showing in the preview:

So... I've realised I actually hate bike lanes.

I'm not against the concept. It's just the theory and the reality don't match.

On roads, I expect idiot car brains and so I'm always on alert for them.

On cycle lanes, I expect to be more safe. But I'm not. The part of my commute where I'm on the high road is fine. As soon as I get to the part with dedicated cycle lanes, I'll encounter idiot cyclists who cycle in the wrong lane (there are lanes on each side of the road for cycles, so there's no excuse) almost leading to collisions. Idiots on illegal mopeds (they are not e-bikes, they are mopeds, whatever they want to claim) think they have a right to use their frickin throttle powered bike on the cycle lane. There will be pedestrians strolling along the cycle lane claiming right of way (I had to avoid one man with a freaking baby in a pushchair walking right towards me, even though there was plenty of space on the pavement, because he refused to move). Or a few weeks ago, an actual freaking car driving at right angles actually totally over the cycle lane right as I was about to go past. I wish I'd kicked his car, absolute car-brained prick. The pic shows where it happened. The man with the pushchair was around the same area.

Idiots upon idiots.

And this is why I have stopped cycling to work.

Study shows why bike lane projects are controversial and what cities can do to make it easier

"Key findings from the study highlight the significance of challenging the status quo to garner support for new initiatives. Despite initial opposition or skepticism, the report suggests that public opinion often shifts in favor of cycling infrastructure once the benefits become evident. However, policymakers are cautioned against adopting a paternalistic approach in promoting active travel schemes, as it may risk alienating segments of the population."

Build safe and separated bike lane projects and people will flock to it like bees to honey, but new study shows getting there can be easier

Our country keeps astounding me with how backwards we are.

Banning all cyclists from pedestrian areas is a dangerous move.

There are so many better solutions, such as:
-marked #CycleLanes
-scrapping the #GigEconomy for deliveries
-investing as much in cycle infrastructure as is invested in vehicle infrastructure

Critics of cycling bans in city centres say they unfairly punish cyclists and push them on to congested roads

Ah, cycle lanes in Spain, a gift that keeps on giving. Here is an example where adding the cycle lane is pure #enshittification. Before the cycle lane you had a nice, wide road to share with other traffic. No need to give way to traffic coming from side streets. Add a cycle lane and a stop sign for cyclists at each side road. Genius! Of course I ignore it, but I'm doing so at my own risk.

Green TD says lack of enforcement creates culture where drivers feel they can ‘infringe with impunity’

The Irish Times

Both incidents were in the borough of #Poole.

Given the change in political make up of the county - Bournemouth recently kicked out it’s two Tory MPs (Tobias Elwood and Connor Burns) I’m hopeful that sound judgement can prevail at local council level too to ensure #cyclists are properly protected within road design.
