Kalman, the world’s smallest alligator, arrives at Tropicarium Jesolo.

AGI - The exemplar, a 19-year-old Cuvier’s dwarf caiman, was donated by Tropicarium Oceanarium Kft. of Budapest to Tropicarium Park Jesolo.

Characteristics of the Cuvier’s Dwarf Caiman
*Paleosuchus palpebrosus* is known as the smallest crocodilian species in the world. It reaches a length of approximately one and a half meters and weighs an average of 6-7 kilograms. Despite its small size, it is an animal of great interest from an evolutionary and biological point of view.

Cooperation between European Zoos
The transfer confirms a consolidated international cooperation between the two zoological institutions. In January 2024, Tropicarium Park Jesolo had already donated Pippo, an American alligator (*Alligator mississippiensis*), to the Tropicarium in Budapest, where it would find an environment more suitable for its needs.

Habitat and Diet
Native to the South American rainforests, the Cuvier’s dwarf caiman lives near waterways and primarily feeds on fish, amphibians, and various invertebrates. Its scientific name reflects many of its distinctive characteristics.
“*Paleosuchus*” means “ancient crocodile” and refers both to its morphology, characterized by robust dermal scales that give it a nearly prehistoric appearance, and to its evolutionary history, as it is genetically distinct from other crocodile species.
The epithet “*palpebrosus*” refers to the bony plates above the eyes, of a dark brown color, which make the animal immediately recognizable.

“With this new arrival – the comment of Paolo Zorzi, biologist and part of the scientific direction of Tropicarium Park – we strengthen our commitment to scientific education, the conservation of biodiversity, and cooperation between European zoos, offering the public the opportunity to observe closely one of the most fascinating and least known crocodilian species in the world. Compared to the other specimens present at the Tropicarium, this is probably the one that most closely resembles its prehistoric ancestors.”
