The P-51D Mustang was a definitive $\text{WWII}$ long-range fighter characterized by its iconic laminar flow airfoil wing design, which significantly reduced drag at high speeds. Its performance was radically boosted by the incorporation of the 1$\text{Packard}$-built Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, enabling it to serve effectively as a high-altitude escort.
