Air pollution in Baltimore's Curtis Bay community linked to nearby coal terminal activity, wind

Bulldozer activity involving coal at an open-air facility at the Port of Baltimore is closely linked to air pollutants in the adjacent neighborhood of Curtis Bay, according to a community-driven study co-led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and South Baltimore community members.

As #coal dust #pollution from #CSX railroad terminal plagues health of local residents in #SouthBaltimore, enraged and beleaguered citizens, including largely low income residents and people of color, recently marched on the #Maryland state capitol, demanding action from Gov. Moore, the state's first African-American governor.

CSX , whose permitted polluting began in 2009, and eventually caused an explosion at the coal pier in December of 2021, is not the only urban polluter in South #Baltimore. The industrial areas near the #CurtisBay site also host #wastewater treatment, toxic chemical plants, open air landfills, and the country’s largest #MedicalWaste incinerator.
