back in 2016, we thought we had about 50 - 80 grey seals haul out on the beach at South Walney. Dave from the RSPB came round to do a drone demo and I asked him to take a photo of the seals from above. I went back to the office and counted about 160 seals - twice what I thought we had. 9 years on and there's now 560 seals!
BIG NEWS β we've just recorded our highest seal count EVER! π¦π This year, we've counted a whopping 560 seals at our South Walney Nature Reserve. Here's Beth, one of our Marine Conservation Officers, to tell you more and show how it's done π This success isn't an accident β it's the result of lots of effort to keep the seals safe and minimise disturbance to the colony. With that in mind, please remember that there's no access to the beach where the seals haul out β Instead, you can avoid disturbing them by watching from Groyne Hide. Don't forget your binoculars!
Really excellent to see Cumbria Wildlife Trust reach their fundraising goal for Skiddaw Forest

Cumbria Wildlife Trust is very close to finalising an exciting purchase of land on the slopes of Skiddaw in the English Lake District. This will be their largest nature reserve, and it will be the highest (in altitude) in England.
This is a wonderful opportunity to restore lost montane habitats, ecosystems, and species on a landscape scale.
