Over 4,000 artists, curators, gallerists and arts professionals have signed an open letter to culture secretary Lisa Nandy in September 2024, urging the government to appoint a Freelancer Commissioner to represent the rights and interests of freelancers in the visual arts industry:
They also call for the establishment a Smart Fund to support visual art in response to budget cuts, studio shutdowns and the growing influence of generative AI. Backed by the Design and Artists Copyright Society (DACS) and the Contemporary Visual Arts Network, this fund is to be financed through a levy on the sales of smartphones, computers and tablets.
Note the heavy emphasis placed on quite conventional notions of copyright by both these artists and by the earlier April 2024 demand for radical action from Creative UK:
