It’s that time of year again! Let’s give a big hoof-stomping cheer for the horses in this year’s Chinese New Year! They may be strong and gallop like the wind, but let’s be real, they’ve got nothing on cheetahs. Those dazzling felines would leave them in the dust... or maybe just at a brisk trot!

In speaking with a friend about pre-Christian traditions in Europe, I used the "Masked Traditions" project as an example.
Often, there's nationalist squabbling about the origins of a tradition or food in a region where borders changed throughout the centuries and people speaking different languages living side by side was common (particularly in Eastern Europe in more recent centuries -- See the book Goodbye, Eastern Europe for many examples).
The mummers/carnival masks, in all of their iterations and attached to their various rituals, is an example of the proliferation of a common tradition. Though even village-level variations exist, the overarching theme of masking for a specific time/ of year/to ward off evil transcends the idea of a single origin.
