This will be one of our very first (non-woody) wildflowers (someone else beat them those pics to come!)- nothing open yet 3 days ago, there could be by now, I'll check again soon... I love the early leaves anyway- Caltha like many plants has extra red/purple pigments in the emerging leaves- this may help them withstand the inevitable cold nights or even days after emergence!

I think the #CrossQuarterDay was a few days ago- mid-point between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. The Latvian Metenis /Meteņi often called the 'Waiting for Spring' is today Feb 06. This year I'm just going to spend some time outside- maybe do a little altar? cookies later, and it might be an excuse for treats on the weekend..lol

1-A series of 4 short videos for the #CrossQuarterDay between Autumn Equinox + Winter Solstice. The date is +/- November 7, observances from 10/ 31 to 11/ 10: #Halloween #DayOfTheDead #Samhain, #MartinsDay etc. In #Latvian tradition it's #Mārtiņi or Mārtiņdiena- which shares a name- and modern date, Nov 10- with the Christian saint, but celebrates a much older #pagan god.

Snow was right on time for the #CrossQuarterDay between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice- marking the #TimeOfIce -beginning of the #winter season in the traditional #Latvian calendar. The days since have been mild, but shadows long, shade and breezes chilly, temperature dropping rapidly as soon as the sun is below the trees or behind clouds so the winter season is definitely at hand, even if it is yet to get deeply cold (we've had nights probably had -10/-12C 14-10F)
