Round 1 Match 5 — Mineral Cup

It’s Christmas come early as vibrant green faces off against just-as-vibrant red. Are you voting for the desert emerald Dioptase, or the red lead Crocoite? Which will it be?

Mineral Cup
Clusters of red crocoite (PbCr6+O4) on beige gibbsite. From Adelaide Mine, Dundas mineral field, Tasmania, Australia. DO NOT LICK.

And actually the truly interesting thing with this round is that both #dioptase and #crocoite have incredibly specific environmental needs for formation. That's why they're only found in really specific parts of the world!

Isn't that neat? (And did @MineralCup do that on purpose or is it a fun coincidence?] #MinCup23

Hmmm I voted for #crocoite because it doesn't really have any uses other than being lead chromate and looking like a cool chaotic spikyboi. (I mean. Lead chromate is pretty chaotic. Especially since its chrome mineral is apparently specifically hexavalent chromium - that's some nasty stuff!!) #MinCup23
