Fell out of the habit of this challenge for a bit, but I'm getting back on track! This film was not one I would have chosen to watch outside of this challenge, but the combination of the time lapse footage and music was surprisingly fascinating

Criterion Challenge prompt 3: directed by Robert Altman. Short Cuts

This was a really good movie, although I feel like I ought to have made a chart to keep track of all the different characters. I love any piece of media that has multiple unrelated but intersecting storylines, or characters who only briefly meet but have a huge impact on each other's lives without ever knowing it, and that is precisely what this movie is.

Criterion Challenge prompt 1: Watch a film from the CC40 Boxset. The Night of the Hunter.

I love a good thriller, and this was no exception. I particularly enjoyed the way music was used throughout, and I now have "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" stuck in my head. It was also a fun challenge to do my illustrations in black and white, matching the movie.

2025's Criterion Challenge is going pretty well so far (ALL THAT MONEY CAN BUY; SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS; BIRTH; WALKER). Today's challenge was a bit of a conundrum: "Your first pick in the Criterion Closet," but the challenge requires unseen films. I chanced PAPER MOON (1973; dir. Peter Bogdanovich). It was a good gamble; I'm 3/3 on Bogdanovich films now.

Criterion Challenge prompt 49: female filmmakers. (as you can tell, I'm not doing the prompts in order.) Anatomy of a Fall, directed by Justine Triet.

This one hit close to home, since I have a family member who died in a similar manner, though under very different circumstances. I appreciated how this film captures the ambiguity that can surround a sudden death. In some deaths, you really can't arrive at a 100% certain understanding of exactly how it happened, and I liked that this movie didn't shy away from that.

I've decided to participate in the #criterionChallenge this year, mainly to reduce my indecision when looking for a movie to watch. I also am adding an additional challenge on top of it, to do some drawings inspired by each film I watch for the challenge, since I haven't done much drawing in a long time and I'd like to pick it back up again.

The first film I watched was Festen (The Celebration). This was for prompt 2, "Watch a film from the year you were born"- 1998. I can't say I enjoyed the film (it's a very grim movie) but I had fun drawing some of the scenes and characters.
