Last night we watched Graduation (2016), a Romanian film by Cristian Mungiu. It's a brilliant dissection of the moral dilemmas faced by father when it appears his daughter will fail life-changing exams due to an assault. The film asks the question, how can you be honest in a dishonest society, while at the same time being dishonest in your private life. Turns out you can't. Like all of Mingiu films he has instinctive sympathy and understanding of his female characters, and his male characters, although nuanced and three-dimensional, are rarely good people. Also see his Cannes winning masterpiece, "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days". Great cinema.
