undefined | Serving garda and retired superintendent appear in court charged over alleged connections to organised crime group

A retired Garda Superintendent, John Murphy, 65, of Clontarf, Dublin, and a serving Garda, Manus Keane, 46, appeared in the Criminal Courts of Justice today after being charged by the Garda National Bureau of Investigation. Both men face three serious offences: facilitating a serious crime for an organised criminal group, perverting the course of justice, and corruption.

The charges stem from an extensive probe that linked the two officers to an alleged network of organised crime. Investigators said Murphy allegedly used his senior position to enable the criminal organisation to carry out its activities, while Keane is accused of providing direct assistance in exchange for personal benefit. Prosecutors allege that the conduct not only undermined the integrity of the police service but also threatened public confidence in law‑enforcement institutions.

The case, reported by Tom Tuite at 14:23, will proceed before the court, where the two officers will be required to enter pleas. If convicted, they face substantial penalties reflecting the gravity of facilitating organised crime and the breach of public trust inherent in perverting justice and corruption.
