On the surface, this is just another way to enshittify National Parks by charging tourists more money than US residents. But how are park officials going to verify that you’re a US resident, and give you preferential rates? That’s right: you need to show papers, and not just State IDs, but passports, “Real ID” verified IDs which are linked to your Federal status, or work permits. In any other year, I would think that this is just another way to gouge tourists, but in 2025, in the atmosphere we’re in, I can’t help but think that this is yet another way to acclimate people to the “papers, please” culture that dictators love. This also means undocumented people are now excluded from entering parks at all, because they may not have a Federal-compliant ID to show, nor a tourist visa.
